WHAT IS FOOTALL
Similarities b/w Sports And DanceAlright, let’s get into it—
WHAT THE HECK IS FOOTBALL, ANYWAY?
So, football. Not the American kind with the helmets (sorry, NFL fans), but the one with, you know, actual feet on the ball. It’s basically the biggest sport on the planet—like, you could go to almost any country and bump into someone obsessed with their local team. The gist? Two squads, eleven players each, running around for 90 minutes (split into two 45-minute halves, with a breather in the middle) trying to boot a ball into the other team’s net. Sounds simple. Turns into chaos. Oh, and back in the day, folks in mediaeval England would chase a pig’s bladder through muddy streets. No joke. We’ve come a long way since then—thank God for real footballs and, you know, actual rules.
FOOTBALL HITS THE OLYMPICS
Football’s been strutting its stuff at the Olympics since, like, forever (well, since Paris 1900). Skipped LA ’32 for reasons I can’t remember—maybe everyone was too busy surfing? Pros weren’t always allowed, and even now, there’s a weird age thing: since 1992, it’s mostly under-23s, but each team can sneak in three old-timers. Women’s football finally got a look-in at Atlanta ’96, and the US women’s team just casually dominated—like, four golds already. Legends.
LIVERPOOL FC: MORE THAN JUST A CLUB
Ah, Liverpool. Founded in 1892 after some classic football beef between Everton and a guy named John Houlding who owned Anfield (Everton fans probably still grumble about this). Liverpool turned into a juggernaut, especially in the wild 70s and 80s with bosses like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley running the show. Twenty league titles, six European Cups—the trophy cabinet’s bursting. If you’ve never heard “You’ll Never Walk Alone” blaring from the Kop, you’re missing out.
ATHLETIC CLUB – BASQUE PRIDE
Now, Athletic Club from Bilbao—these guys are a whole vibe. Only players with Basque roots can play for them. No exceptions. Founded in 1898 by a bunch of local students, they’re one of just three clubs never to get relegated from La Liga. Big flex. Some highlights: they won the double (La Liga and Copa del Rey) in 1983/84, their stadium is called San Mamés (the old one opened in 1913, the new one in 2013), and their rivalry with Barcelona is the stuff of legend.
KEY MOMENTS FOR ATHLETIC CLUB:
1898: Club’s born
1901: Switched to the English “Athletic”
1902: Won the Copa de la Coronacion as “Club Bizkaia” (a bit of a mashup team)
1903: Absorbed Bilbao FC
1913: Opened original San Mamés
2013: Moved to the new San Mamés
80s: Absolute monsters, winning trophies left and right
LIVERPOOL VS ATHLETIC CLUB – RECENT DRAMA
So, just recently, Liverpool and Athletic Club had a couple of preseason dust-ups at Anfield. Salah and Gakpo did their thing; Liverpool edged it 3-2. Earlier, Liverpool’s “B team” (fringe players, let’s be real) smacked Athletic 4-1. For the later game, coach Arne Slot just switched the whole squad, because… why not? Salah scored early (classic), then Sancet equalised after some shoddy Liverpool defending. Gakpo bagged another after the break, cleaning up a rebound. Not exactly the Champions League final, but hey, preseason’s for shaking off the rust.
